10/07/2022 Case study
While most of our white sugars are packaged in recyclable paper bags, the packaging of our brown sugars presents us with a challenge. The moisture content of brown sugars means that plastic is the most practical packaging solution to prevent food waste. In looking for more environmentally friendly alternatives, regulations governing materials in contact with food can restrict options. Also while some materials are technically recyclable, there are few curbside schemes that actually achieve this in practice. As a result, we are simultaneously looking for thinner, lighter and stronger materials to reduce the amount of packaging we use.
In 2021, we undertook a project to reduce the plastic content of our 500g, 1kg and 2kg bags of brown sugars by 10%. This will generate an estimated plastic reduction of 10 Metric tonnes in 2022 based upon 2021 volumes.
