10/07/2022 Case study
We have been producing sugar and syrup in Newham for over 140 years, and have a long history of supporting the local community dating back to the 19th century. Today, this translates into a focused community programme based on long-term partnerships, centred around the London Borough of Newham, where our Thames Refinery and Plaistow Wharf are located.
Watch this video to find out more about our long-term charity partnerships in Newham.
We support a number of local charities, providing them with funding, volunteers and in-kind support. Between them, these charities support some of the most vulnerable people, both young and old, and help tackle some of our community’s biggest challenges.
Community Links, a partner of ours for over 40 years, tackle health and social inequality in East London, providing advice, as well as youth and health programmes to help people of all ages reach their potential.
Richard House Hospice, who we have supported for over 20 years, provides care for more than 300 families with children who have life-limiting conditions.
Newham All Stars Academy (NASSA), a partner for over 12 years, engages disadvantaged young people across East London to play basketball in a fun and safe environment. Sessions include mentoring talks, educating the young people on the dangers of knife crime and gang culture, and the opportunity to gain basketball coaching, officiating, and first aid qualifications. As well as financial support and volunteers, we also provide NASSA with office space free of charge at our Thames Refinery.
The Royal Docks Learning and Activity Centre, who we have supported for 50 years and is only a few meters from our Thames Refinery, is a vibrant local community centre. It provides high quality activities and services for our diverse local community including holiday schemes for children, support services or women, support for parents, over 50s social club and activities, training and community education, healthy cooking and well-being, leisure and sports and activities, trips and outings and seasonal activities and celebrations.
Community Food Enterprise (CFE), supported by Tate & Lyle Sugars for nearly 20 years, is a social enterprise working to alleviate food poverty by supplying and distributing surplus food to frontline charities and community organisations in East London. From their warehouse on our Thames Refinery site, CFE feeds around 10,000 people per month, delivering 5,000 kilos of food across East London.
East End Community Foundation, who we have supported for over 8 years, provides funding and ideas to support Newham children during the school holidays.
