26/09/2022 Case study
We have been producing sugar and syrup in Newham for over 140 years, and have a long history of supporting the local community dating back to the 19th century. The Lyle’s Local Fund started in 2017 with an aim to reach and support smaller, community-led projects with a simple application process – good causes that our larger community engagement programme was not reaching.
The £25,000 Fund annually invests in small local social enterprises, schools, charities, community groups and not-for-profit organisations who are working to make Newham a healthier, safer and more prosperous place to live and work.
The Lyle’s Local Fund has awarded over £150,000 to more than 60 projects in Newham since it launched in 2017. Projects funded have included car maintenance workshops to empower vulnerable women, weekly line dancing classes for isolated elderly residents, a poverty proofing audit of a local primary school to see whether poorer children attending the schools were unintentionally feeling ashamed or excluded and art workshops for sufferers of mental illness.
